I learned about Achim Reichel as a krautrock pioneer with his solo project A.R. & Machines, active really for only a few years. This song comes from the 1971 album "Die grüne Reise" (aka "The Green Journey”), the first of the moniker’s two albums.
Notably, this guy was also in The Rattles, the last band to open for The Beatles.
To my ears, they kind of sound like a less good Jefferson Airplane.
Reichel was also in a psychedelic band called Wonderland with Les Humphries. later of the Les Humpries Singers (surprise?), who I’d never heard of before reading up on ol’ A.R.
Wonderland never released an album that I'm aware of.
The LHS seem like a proto-Polyphonic Spree in that whole band-that-looks-like-a-cult tradition.
According to Wikipedia, Reichel's biggest hit was actually super late in his career, considering he once opened for the Beatles. "Aloha Heja He" hit the charts in 1991.
Sounds like he learned some things from Leonard Cohen, though I have no idea what.
